Wedding & Portrait Photographer Amanda Howse bio picture
  • About Amanda

While studying to become an actor at Emerson College, Amanda received a gift that would change her life forever: her grandfather’s old manual Olympus 35mm camera. Falling in love with the black and white image, Amanda became inspired to study photography and traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico for her first photography workshop. Soon she was pursuing her second BA from the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. While studying Portraiture, she was awarded a two-month internship with a well-known portrait and wedding photographer in WA state. She was instantly hooked, and moved to the Seattle area three years later to pursue a career as a wedding photographer. Today, Amanda has finished her eighth wedding season as a photographer and shows no sign of stopping. Amanda loves every aspect of covering weddings, from the excitement and anticipation of capturing the newly-engaged couple, to the behind-the-scenes action before the ceremony, to those unforgettable moments when two people at last say “I do.” Amanda considers it an honor to be invited to spend the entire day doing what makes her happy: capturing images of a couple on the happiest day of their lives. Amanda loves getting to know the wedding party, and she has a knack for creating an atmosphere so relaxed and comfortable that most people forget they are even having their photos taken. The art of photography is constantly evolving, and Amanda is devoted to learning all the latest tricks of the photographer’s trade, attending workshops and classes yearly, maintaining membership in numerous photography guilds, and gathering inspiration from blogs, magazines, and galleries. She brings all of this knowledge and inspiration to every sitting, every wedding, and every opportunity she finds to capture the beauty of life on film. There’s truly nothing else she’d rather do.

Studio Model | Jamie

Jamie volunteered to be a studio model for me through facebook. How awesome is that of her? It was a cold December morning when we braved my new home garage studio (read un-heated) to test it out. Jamie was a rockstar though, and we were able to get some nice new profile portraits done for her. Here are a few of my favorites. Please let me know if you’re interested in some studio portraits, as they are discounted right now!

Laurel Creek Manor | Sumner, WA | Melissa & Eric

I’m a bit behind on blogging this one. I don’t know how it got skipped though, as it was an awesome wedding, complete with a firetruck, firefighters, a wonderful sunny day, and a gorgeous bride. Did I mention the venue? Laurel Creek Manor is a gem of a location in Sumner. It was my first time there, and I simply loved it! The getting ready rooms were awesomesauce, the light flowing in through the large windows was divine, the yard is a perfect place to party and dance your heart away into the night, and the front of the manor is perfect for portraits!!!

I arrived just before Melissa put on her dress. What a sight!!! She looked amazing. Eric, I soon learned, has a twin brother, thank goodness they didn’t wear matching tux’s… (not.) I loved so many of their images that I just had to share loads of them with you! One super awesome detail she had was her toenails: there was a tuxedo and a wedding dress on her big toes, both hand painted by the lovely ladies at 8th Day Spa in Federal Way. The dance photos show you how much fun was had by all. I simply love how I caught the tears flowing down Melissa’s face during the ceremony, very moving. The dance with her father was precious, and her brother’s toast was hilarious, complete with beer being thrown out of his cup!

And who doesn’t just love wedding party shots with a firetruck in them? Soooo cool.

Twin Lake Golf Course | Federal Way, WA | Lynne & Paul

Lynne & Paul got married in the best month of the year: October! (when I said “I do” 5 years ago). The started off my October weddings. Lynne is a women who loves all things Coach as do I. Her shoes were Coach, as were her Bridesmaids. Gotta love that! This was my 3rd wedding done at Twin Lakes Golf Course, but the first one where the ceremony was inside. The colors were a rich brown, and helped it feel like fall. My favorite season! I’ve been working on some new creative ring shots, so check this one out! The groom loves his Crown Royal.

Enjoy!

Family Portraits | What to Wear | Winter Part 2

Ever wonder what to wear when you get your family portraits done professionally?

A couple general rules of thumb are:
-colors in the same pallet (such as browns, greens, blues together, or pinks, red, yellows together)
-nothing with words, logos, or inappropriate things on them
-bring multiple outfits in case some things don’t work, get dirty, and so on
-pick complimentary clothing colors, you don’t need to match or wear the exact same thing
-accessories can be a fun thing to integrate into your outfit
-shoes do matter, so watch what you put on your feet
-watch patterns and “loud” outfits as they will distract from the main element of the photo: you!
-most importantly though, be and dress like yourself. (you don’t want your photos to have you looking/feeling uncomfortable in them)

And since this is a photography blog, here are some photo samples of outfits:

Baby P’s First Xmas

Last week found me experimenting with some fun holiday lights, a baby in a Santa suit, an energetic dog, a toddler and their big sister. What I learned: photographing holiday lights with kids is not as easy as you’d think. The dog never holds still. What I already knew: kids and babies cry, for no reason. Getting three kids to smile and look at you is nearly impossible. Babies smile best when the camera is not aimed at them… Combine all of the above and voila:
