Giving Back | Volunteering your skills

Giving back to the community is a big thing for me. I try to do what I can. Last year the hubby, his parents, and I went and served dinner at a women & children’s homeless shelter in Seattle on Thanksgiving day. It was amazing to see how many families, couples, and people brought in food to donate to them. I also always donate all the clothing we no longer wear to thrift stores, the Salvation Army, or clothing bins at churches. Why waste clothes that I either no longer like, or more likely, can’t fit into???

I was recently referred by a fellow photographer to an organization called Soulumination. I did my first shoot for them last week. I am not allowed to show the photos, but that’s okay. What I did I did for that family. They were a family with 7 kids, a dog, and a guinea pig. Oh, and some frogs too! One of the kids is on hospice and an oxygen machine. He is 16, we’ll call him J. I was able to take family portraits of all of them together, dressed in their new red shirts, and many of J with each sibling and his parents. They hadn’t had a family photo of everyone together in over ten years! We spent some time in his room, where he showed me his lambourgini collection, his guitar, and many other things. His best friend was there by his side helping him out the entire time. I’m very happy I was able to take one hour out of my day and spend it creating wonderful images for this family and J. You can visit their website and donate too (link above).
