Wedding & Portrait Photographer Amanda Howse bio picture
  • About Amanda

While studying to become an actor at Emerson College, Amanda received a gift that would change her life forever: her grandfather’s old manual Olympus 35mm camera. Falling in love with the black and white image, Amanda became inspired to study photography and traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico for her first photography workshop. Soon she was pursuing her second BA from the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. While studying Portraiture, she was awarded a two-month internship with a well-known portrait and wedding photographer in WA state. She was instantly hooked, and moved to the Seattle area three years later to pursue a career as a wedding photographer. Today, Amanda has finished her eighth wedding season as a photographer and shows no sign of stopping. Amanda loves every aspect of covering weddings, from the excitement and anticipation of capturing the newly-engaged couple, to the behind-the-scenes action before the ceremony, to those unforgettable moments when two people at last say “I do.” Amanda considers it an honor to be invited to spend the entire day doing what makes her happy: capturing images of a couple on the happiest day of their lives. Amanda loves getting to know the wedding party, and she has a knack for creating an atmosphere so relaxed and comfortable that most people forget they are even having their photos taken. The art of photography is constantly evolving, and Amanda is devoted to learning all the latest tricks of the photographer’s trade, attending workshops and classes yearly, maintaining membership in numerous photography guilds, and gathering inspiration from blogs, magazines, and galleries. She brings all of this knowledge and inspiration to every sitting, every wedding, and every opportunity she finds to capture the beauty of life on film. There’s truly nothing else she’d rather do.

Family Portraits | What to Wear | Spring Part 1

Ever wonder what to wear when you get your family portraits done professionally?

A couple general rules of thumb are:
-colors in the same pallet (such as browns, greens, blues together, or pinks, red, yellows together)
-nothing with words, logos, or inappropriate things on them
-bring multiple outfits in case some things don’t work, get dirty, and so on
-pick complimentary clothing colors, you don’t need to match or wear the exact same thing
-accessories can be a fun thing to integrate into your outfit
-shoes do matter, so watch what you put on your feet
-watch patterns and “loud” outfits as they will distract from the main element of the photo: you!
-most importantly though, be and dress like yourself. (you don’t want your photos to have you looking/feeling uncomfortable in them)

And since this is a photography blog, here are some photo samples of outfits:

Sanders Mansion | Auburn, WA | Kelsey & Terry

This wedding had sooooo many cool details, I can’t wait to share all of them!!! Sanders Mansion is one of my favorite venues. They have amazing settings for photography: the getting ready room in the mansion, the ceremony site, a pond complete with a swan and a boat for the couple, a swing, grasses, flowers, a fountain, tall trees, a bridge and more!!! Kelsey & Terry chose the classic colors of teal & brown for their wedding. The wedding party looked awesome and we got some great group shots.

My favorite teal “item” was definitely the ring bearers mohawk, colored just for the wedding! How cool is that? Some other amazing teal items were the awesome leaning cake, and the candy bar! Everyone loved the candy bar, which looked as if it had come straight off the pages of Martha Stewart. Kasey wore her grandparents rings on a bracelet so they could be with her in spirit. Talking about cool colors, the bride has two different colored eyes, super fun!

Everett, WA | Nicole & Jacob

Nicole & Jacob had one of the beautiful sunny WA days that we get few of here in the Pacific Northwest. The light was just yummy. We decided to head to a beautiful park to capture some of the sun’s rays, and I’m so glad we did! The way the light just wrapped around the wedding party and made them glow was eye andy for this photographer. Lacking an assistant, I put my wedding party to work teaching them all how to wield a reflector, which they all excelled at.

I love the color purple, and this wedding fit into that hue. The bridesmaids were decked out in Sangria, and all of them looked great! One of my favorite ring shots ever was taken at this wedding (see the purple hydrangeas) swoon.

Sue T Family Portraits | Seahurst Park: Burien, WA

Giving back is very important, as is donating things for charitable causes. Every year I strive to give back to my community through my photography. One of the groups I donated to last year was Birthday Dreams. They are “a non-profit organization dedicated to providing birthday parties to homeless children and foster children living in group homes. Join us as we bring smiles to the faces of the homeless children around Puget Sound. Every child deserves a birthday!”

I donated a Portrait Package last year, and the very generous Sue T. was the recipient of this. Here are her photos of her family. We braved the cold, wet day right after the New Year. As long as my fingers don’t lose feeling when shooting, I don’t mind the cold. Thank you “T” family for this wonderful session and all it does for Birthday Dreams.

Power Chicks | Empowering Women for Financial Independence | Sip Restaurant

Last night I had the pleasure of being the photographer at another awesome Power Chicks event: Empowering Women for Financial Independence. It took place at Sip, a really fun, swanky wine bar and restaurant in Seattle across from the downtown library. The speaker for the evening was: Kathryn Garrison of Moss-Adams Wealth Advisors. She schooled us women in everything from how to budget, what types of life insurance to get (and not get), how to teach your kids to save and live below their means, and much much more! As we “Sip”ped our wine, coffee and water, we munched on some awesome cheeses, hummus and other dips, along with getting in our veggies!

The event was sponsored by: The Feminine Face of Money and The Introvert Entrepreneur.

Enjoy the photos.
